TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Fidget spinner is currently gaining great popularity across all ages. It is played by holding the center part looking like a wheel with two fingers (index finger and thumb), and then spinning it by using the middle finger.
Child psychologist Anita Chandra said that children can play fidget spinner, but it depends on the use of the spinner.
"For children under 3 years old, playing spinner entails hazards some of which are getting choked or swallowing small parts of the toy," Anita said Monday, July 10.
In addition, Anita said, children also have to pay attention to the place to play it.
"Where is it played? If they play it at school, it can distract them from learning," she said.
Anita explained that different from the case of children with special needs, the toy is used as a tool for stimming or self-stimulation.
"Then fidget spinners can be used for this purpose. Nevertheless, the use of spinners requires surveillance, limitation and careful consideration of its function," she added.
