TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Jokowi assured the public that he would protect the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) from groups that are attempting to weaken or even disband its authority through House of Representative’s (DPR) right of inquiry.

Presidential Spokesman, Johan Budi Sapto Pribowo, said that even though President Jokowi is unable to directly intervene with the inquiry, the President will continue to protect KPK up to the moment he would have to respond to the result of the inquiry.

“If the recommendation is to weaken or even disband KPK, President Jokowi will never do such a thing. It’s been confirmed that the President is clear in his attempt to strengthen KPK,” said Johan on Monday, July 11.

President Jokowi understands that the DPR has the right to form a right of inquiry special committee. It is the reason why the government will not intervene with the investigative procedure currently being conducted by the committee.

DPR’s choice to investigate KPK through an inquiry is considered unconstitutional and misdirected considering that a right for an inquiry could only be used in government policies as an executive. Meanwhile the KPK is a Judicative system.

The public got even more worried considering that on Thursday, last week, the special committee for the inquiry collected statements from corruption case convicts at the Sukamiskin Penitentiary in Bandung. The special committee claims to have obtained evidences of human rights violations conducted by KPK against the convicts.
