Police: Bandung Bomb Maker Learned Radicalism from Internet

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Police chief General Tito Karnavian said that the pressure cooker bomb case in Bandung is a new phenomenon because the perpetrator is not linked to a particular terror ring and had learned radicalism through the internet before supporting ISIS.

“It’s a new phenomenon which is already happened overseas since 10 years ago,” Tito said in Manado yesterday.

On Saturday afternoon, a blast allegedly came from a pressure cooker shook Buah Batu district residents in Bandung city. The incident took place at a property rented by terror suspect Agus Wiguna, 21. The man was out selling meatballs elsewhere in Bandung when the blast happened.

The perpetrator of pressure cook bomber in Bandung turned to radical ideology after reading some materials on the internet. The man then learned to make bombs and had wanted to launch an attack by himself.

Tito said that counterterror measures would be needed to prevent people from turning to radical Islam.

“Counter-radicalization would involve many parties, not only the intelligence. That aim would be to prevent vulnerable people from becoming terrorists,” Tito said following the arrest of the Bandung pressure cooker bomb maker.
