TEMPO.CO, Surabaya - Surabaya Administration admits that it is difficult to preserve traditional art performance Ludruk (Javanese all-male play) which is abandoned by its fans.
Surabaya Culture and Tourism Agency head Widodo Suryantoro said that most Ludruk actors who are still known are not from the city.
"Surabaya used to have Cak Markeso, Cak Markuat, Cak Kancil but there is no successor now. Most of their successors switch profession," he said in Surabaya on Saturday, July 8.
He explained that the city administration has provided facilities to support Ludruk preservation including facilities in public assembly places namely Balai Pemuda and Tempat Hiburan Rakyat (THR). However, this initiative fails since no one watches the performance.
With this condition, he continued, Culture and Tourism Agency works with Education Agency to deliver traditional art education material to students in Surabaya. The purpose is to introduce this traditional art performance to the young generation, he said.
