TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Following the WannaCry ransomware attack that commenced on Friday, May 12, Microsoft issued a patch update for Microsoft Windows SMB Server.
The software that is prone to be infected includes Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012, Windows 10, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2016.
The update, according to Microsoft, is to overcome the vulnerability in Microsoft Windows, considering that the most vulnerable to the attack is Microsoft Server Message Block 1.0 (SMBv1).
Microsoft also deems the security patch updates critical for every version that Microsoft has shelled out to the market. This newly updated security patch overcomes the vulnerability of SMBv1 in handling specific requests which are the malware’s main target.
It turns out that WannaCry penetrates into the Windows system through weaknesses in the software’s server message block (SMB) protocol. The protocol is one of the software’s features that enables computer data transfer through a LAN.
Microsoft issued a list of a number of Windows software that is vulnerable to WannaCry ransomware. The versions that are not listed have gone through their lifecycle or isn’t affected by the attack.
