Six Arrested after Trying to Disband Rally for Ahok in Yogyakarta

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A peace rally supporting the inactive Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama alias Ahok staged around Tugu Yogyakarta monument yesterday, May 10, was disturbed by dozens of individuals.
Local police promptly fired four warning shots to control the situation. Six individuals have been arrested following the incident.

Yogyakarta Police Chief Sr. Comr. Tommy Wibisono was at the scene ordering the rioters to disperse. “We will legally process provocateurs. Please keep Yogyakarta peaceful.”
The six individuals were arrested for yielding wooden poles and black flags bearing Arabic words in their bags.

Hundreds of people wearing white shirts and black ribbons staged a candlelight vigil in Yogyakarta. “We are fighting against injustice and religious sentiments and racialism in Indonesia,” protest coordinator Pedro said.
Earlier on Tuesday, Ahok was sentenced to two years in prison for blasphemy.
