TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s fish production in the first quarter of 2017 reached 3.97 million tons or a 3.1 percent increase on a year-on-year basis. The Fishery Ministry said in a press release that the figure is equal to Rp30.9 trillion or rose by 37 percent compared to the same period last year.
Director-general of fish farming Slamet Soebjakto said that the increase in production was followed by farming business efficiency, reflected in the aquaculture exchange rate (NTUPI) at 109.8.
“Aquaculture has strategic, complex values, ranging from economic value to social value to geopolitical aspects, particularly in enhancing self-sufficiency using a welfare-based approach,” the press release stated.
Slamet elaborated that ornamental fish production hit 350.45 million valued at Rp2.5 billion or a 7.5 percent increase compared to the same period last year. The Fishery Ministry this year launched priority programs which include the provision of 100 million seeds for aquaculture in 34 provinces, revitalization of 250 floating net cages (KJA) and insurance for 3,300 hectares of fish ponds in 13 provinces, development of 210 hectares of minapadi (rice-fish farming), catfish farming with biofloc technology and offshore aquaculture.
