TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Police has called on public not to be provoked by a wreath burning incident during the commemoration of the International Workers Day, which is also known as May Day, at Jalan Medan Merdeka Selatan on Monday, May 1, 2017.
Jakarta Police spokesperson Raden Prabowo Argo Yuwono said that the incident was spontaneous.
“It was a mass action, because there were a lot of people,” Argo said.
Earlier, workers rallying in front of the Jakarta City Hall burned wreaths placed on the curb, which were sent to Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok. Police immediately extinguished the fire.
“Not many wreaths were burned. Probably only two or three,” Argo explained.
According to Argo, the wreaths was about to be disposed of. Argo added that police has not yet made arrests against protesters who was involved in the incident.
“It has been predicted by the intelligence. We’re just helping to ensure that the commemoration of May Day go well,” Argo said.
