TEMPO.CO, Bandung - A number of military explosive devices was discovered at a blast scene in a junkyard in Jambudipa, West Bandung. The blast killed one person.
West Java Police Spokesman, Commissioner Yusri Yunus stated that the military explosives were collected from scrap metal scavengers. Police found a number of mortars and dozens of its projectiles.
“We also discovered one explosive device and one high explosive anti-personnel fragment,” Yusri said today, May 1.
According to him, before the explosion occurred, two workers were tidying the scraps and junks unaware that there were explosive devices under the stacks of scraps. Witnesses said that the blast can be heard up to 300 meters from the location.
“The explosion was triggered by the pressure and the workers' poundings onto the pile of scraps that had the explosives underneath,” Yusri explained.
The blast left Endang Nurdin (45) dead while another victim, Hendri (25) sustained severe injuries. “The other victim was severely injured, he broke his leg,” Yusri said.
Police have named the junkyard owner as a suspect for failing to notice that he had kept active explosive devices in his junkyard.
Authorities are currently investigating the origins of the explosive devices that are suspected to owned by a military squad.
