TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Communication and Information Rudiantara said that the Indonesian press has the responsibility to help maintain the unity of the Republic of Indonesia.

When attending the World Press Freedom Day 2017 in Jakarta, Monday afternoon, Rudiantara said the responsibility comes as the Indonesian press has more freedom compared to neighboring countries' journalists.

"We are only governed by the Press Law, which shows that the government does not intervene. However, a free and democratic journalism must come with responsibility. That responsibility is to maintain the unity of Indonesia as a nation," the Minister said.

The WPFD 2017 will be held for four days from May 1 to 4. The annual agenda initiated by the UNESCO is expected to see the attendance of more than 1,500 journalists, 500 of whom are foreign journalists from 90 countries.

"There are also students and youth participants who will take part in workshops. This year's workshop theme is 'Critical Minds for Critical times'," he said.

The WPFD 2017 focuses on strengthening the freedom and quality of journalism to make the media more effective in contributing to a positive development, especially on the relationship between freedom of expression, justice for all, peace, and inclusiveness.
