TEMPO/Marifka Wahyu Hidayat.

TEMPO.CO, JakartaIndonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla has asked the automotive industry in Indonesia to produce environment-friendly vehicles or "green cars" to penetrate the foreign market.

"We hope Indonesian automotive industry would not only assemble car but also master the technology to obtain better sales," Kalla stated here during the opening of Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) 2017 on Thursday.

Kalla stated that the development of technology can bring about innovation to the automotive industry.

He added that many Indonesian people wish to have low-cost vehicles and green cars.

"People want a car with low energy consumption. They consider the kilometers that can be achieved with one liter of fuel. It means that the challenge is developing. Thus, we hope Indonesia can master the technology," he remarked.

By mastering the technology, Indonesia can develop research and design innovation to fulfill the standards and market desires.

"The government will support the development that can transform Indonesia not only as the market but also the production center for automotive," Kalla pointed out.

He hoped Indonesia could compete with Thailand that has automotive manufacture industry.
