TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta governor-elect Anies Baswedan said that he would implement policies that were removed by current Jakarta Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok. According to Anies, there are no strong reasons to ban good activities.
“I received aspirations from housewives, which will be considered,” Anies said during the commemoration of Isra Miraj (Prophet Muhammad’s Ascension Day) at At-tin Mosque in Taman Mini Indonesia Indah in Jakarta on Monday, April 24, 2017.
“Exercise of animal sacrifice [for Eid al-Adha] and takbiran (recital of God is great] will be allowed, the National Monument (Monas) can be used again for majelis taklim (Islamic congregation), holy Quran recital can be held in official residences. Village offices and gymnasiums can also be used for majelis taklim. We will restore everything [to the original condition],” he added.
According to the governor-elect, Indonesia is founded based on the five principles, which the first principle is related to the absoluteness of God. Anies views that the government must support activities that reflect the five principles, including religious activities.
Earlier, Ahok called on residents not to conduct takbiran on streets and suggested them to conduct it at mosques. He considered that the bans on takbiran on streets were to prevent traffic accidents and reduce traffic jams in the capital.
Ahok issued Governor Instruction No. 168/2015 on animal control, shelter and slaughter, banning sales and slaughters of sacrifice animals on streets and near schools. He also banned Quran recitals at the National Monument, arguing that such an activity should be conducted at mosques, instead of the National Monument.
