TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) researcher Emerson Yuntho suggested the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) form a special security unit following an acid attack on KPK senior investigator Novel Baswedan. Emerson said that the unit could be similar to the Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) employed by police in the United States.
According to Emerson, the unit is urgently needed since the KPK constantly faces terror attempts for 14 years.

“The KPK must have its own security unit,” he told Tempo via a text message on Friday, April 14, 2017.
Emerson added that personnel of the unit could be specially recruited and trained, “as well as armed.”

Emerson explained that the tasks of this unit would be safeguarding investigators, employees, and KPK leaders in certain conditions; conducting silent operations to help the enforcement division; and launching investigations into and arresting KPK attackers.
Earlier, two unidentified assailants attacked Novel with acid when returning to his home from a mosque in Jakarta. KPK chief Agus Rahardjo said that KPK investigators are vulnerable to such an attack since they are publicly exposed. Agus promised that the KPK is currently finding a way to mitigate the risk and intensify security for investigators.
