TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi has spoken out on Vietnam-based low-cost carrier VietJet Air’s plan to expand to Indonesia. He said that the airline known for its bikini-wearing flight attendants has yet to file for a permit to open a new route.
According to Budi, VietJet Air would need to follow the prevailing rule should it wish to obtain such permit. “There is no [request for a permit], but we will have to tell [the applicant] that decency is key here,” Budi Karya Sumadi said at the Transportation Ministry compound in Jakarta on Tuesday, April 11, 2017.
VietJet Air plans to fly above Indonesian sky in the middle of 2017, according to Indonesian Consul General in Ho Chi Minh Jean Anis.
Jean Anis said that the airline is exploring the opportunity to open Ho Chi Minh-Jakarta route.
VietJet, founded in December 2011, operates 300 flights daily, serving 63 domestic and international flights. The airline has flown an estimated 35 million passengers.
VietJet owner Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao is Southeast Asia’s richest female, according to Forbes. The 46-year-old woman has a net worth of US$1.7 billion.
