Indonesia to Install Solar Panels in 2,500 Villages in 2019-2020

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Energy and Human Resources Minister Ignasius Jonan said the government will install solar panels in 2,500 villages in Indonesian remote areas.

“The target is at least 2,500 villages will be electrified by 2019 and 2020,” the Energy Minister said during a conference on Indonesian energy in Jakarta on Tuesday, April 11, 2017.

The program will be carried out after the government scrapped electricity subsidy for the 900 volt ampere (VA) category.

Jonan said that at least 10,000 villages, home to 15 million people, have yet to enjoy electricity which will be addressed with the program.

Solar panels are expected to generate 20,000 Megawatt of electricity by 2019. The program will be carried out under a presidential regulation on solar panel system in lieu of electricity subsidies.

At the conference, Jonan said that the energy sector is a major driving force of the national economy. At present, the contribution of oil and gas to the state revenue is no longer significant.

The Energy Ministry said that energy self-sufficiency and equality will help improve prosperity and economic growth.
