TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) plans to increase their level of protection for its investigators who are currently handling major cases. The measures, according to KPK Deputy Chairman Alexander Marwata, must be taken following the acid attack on one of KPK's investigator Novel Baswedan.
"Investigators that are handling major cases and high profile individuals might need protection to avoid unwanted incident," Alex said on Tuesday, April 11, 2017.
Alex explained that the protection could be in the form of a personal bodyguard or escort, although according to Alex, not every investigator would be provided a bodyguard. "There will be a risk assessment. Not all cases that are being handled by KPK will have the same level of risks," Alex said.
There are rumors and assumptions saying that Novel Baswedan was attacked because he is currently investigating the electronic ID (e-KTP) graft case, which implicates a number of high profile individuals.
Coordinator of Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) Adnan Topan Husodo, condemned the attack. Adnan said that the terror act against Novel must be perceived as a threat against the attempt to eradicate corruption. "Individuals or groups that conduct terror share the same objective, to stop the legal proceedings of a certain case," Adnan said.
