TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said that the government has not yet decided the proper form of a legal framework to accommodate online-based motorcycle taxis (ojek).
"We will find a particular form [of legislation] and pattern in order to provide legitimacy for [online-based ojek]," Budi said at the Senayan Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta on Tuesday, April 4, 2017.
Budi explained that regulating online ojek in a Ministerial Regulation is out of the question because currently, there is no law that regulates online ojek.
Budi said that he will be very careful in finding a proper form of legal framework for online ojek because the new transportation mode has been widely used and becomes a main source of income for many people. Currently, a motorcycle is not included in the list of public transportations and as a result, there is no law that regulates how it operates.
For the time being, the Transportation Ministry allows regional governments to draft their own regulation on online-based transportation.
