TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Commission of Business Competition Supervisory (KPPU) Chairman, Syarkawi Rauf, views that the lower and upper limit fares for the online taxi will bump up the cost of transportation. He said that the lower limit fare regulation will be a disincentive for the business and can potentially hamper innovations.
Despite this, Jakarta Transportation Agency reports that the number of operable online taxis has steadily increased every day. Head of the Transportation Agency, Andriyansyah, predicts that the numbers would reach 20,000 units. However, there are only 7,582 units that are officially listed until March 2017 since Jakarta can only conduct the vehicle test (KIR) to the number in this year.
According to Go-Jek commissioner Patrick Waluyo, the number of operable online taxi units in several cities has reached 250,000 units. Each unit is largely incorporated in two or three operators.
Head of Public Communication and Information at the Transportation Ministry, J. A. Barata, stated that the government will provide a three-month opportunity for operators and drivers to adapt with the new regulation that will take effect on April 1, 2017.
