TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs. Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, announced that the recovery period for the damaged Raja Ampat coral reef would need 50 to 100 years. On March 4, 2017, British cruise ship Caledonian Sky smashed into thousands of acres worth of coral reefs in Raja Ampat during low tide.

Based on a survey conducted by Indonesian State Officials, the coral reef rehabilitation period in Raja Ampat would need more than 100 years to completely recover, considering that it contains various invaluable types of coral reefs.

“We are evaluating the loss together with the Ministry of Environment. We have carefully assessed it, and the insurance company has produced the data. Swedish, Bahamas were involved too, which makes it a pretty complex matter,” says Luhut on Friday, March 24, 2017.

Previously, the Ministry’s Coordinating Deputy of Maritime Sovereignty, Arif Havas Oegroseno said that the Indonesian Government and the cruise ship’s insurance company, P&I Club, agreed upon the surveyed coral reef area that accumulated to 22,060 square meter.

The average depth of the surveyed area is between three to six meters which is separated in nine transects.

“The insurance company, P&I Club London, has also agreed to compensate every loss that will be claimed as long as it fulfills two requirements; verified and in a reasonable cost,” He explained.
