TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chairman of the Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) Muhammad Al Hamid said that the Jakarta Gubernatorial Elections has yet to reflect any form of political maturity. Hamis argued that each pair of candidates has the tendency to file police reports and corner each other.
"I say it's caused by the lack of political maturity in Jakarta's Gubernatorial Election," Hamid said on Thursday, March 23, 2017.
Hamid said tat each candidate pair should have displayed political maturity instead of hastily attacking each other.
Hamid added that electoral campaigns should be the place to introduce political education. "It's a pity that campaigns are filled with slanders and police reports. The public's chance to vote for a leader could disappear," Hamid said.
In addition, Hamid explained that candidates who are found to have violated any election rules will be disqualified immediately. Hamid added that this is why the Integrated Law Enforcement center (Gakkumdu) was established. "If the violation is clear and there is enough evidence or facts [to support it], we'll immediately disqualify the candidates," Hamid said.
Hamid revealed that the Gakkumdu has received 1,357 reports on election violation from across Indonesia, including Jakarta.
Commissioner of the General Elections Commission (KPU) Ferry Kurnia Rizkiyansyah hoped that Jakarta will be able to go through the second phase of the gubernatorial campaign without any major problems.
