TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono alias AHY emerges as one of the most popular candidates for Indonesian president in 2019 election, Indo Barometer survey finds. The son of former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) has a substantial popularity rating at above 50 percent. Agus stands behind prominent names: Jokowi, Jusuf Kalla, Megawati Soekarnoputri and Prabowo.

Agus’s name recognition is at 71.7, whereas those of Jokowi, Jusuf Kalla, Megawati Soekarnoputri and Prabowo are around 96-99 percent.

“SBY has done a remarkable thing. He made sacrifices for [Jakarta] election, but he gains [a lot] for the presidential election,” Indo Barometer executive director Muhammad Qodari said yesterday at Grand Sahid Hotel in Jakarta. AHY ran for 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election but has been defeated in the first round.

Qodari said that he had intentionally included AHY in his survey in place of SBY, citing that SBY has earlier talked about the leadership baton.

Despite a high level of name recognition, AHY scores low in preference level at 48 percent. Meanwhile, the preference levels of Jokowi, Jusuf Kalla, Megawati and Prabowo are above 50 percent.

Qodari said that AHY only garnered 0.4 percent when respondents were allowed to pick their preferred candidate. Sitting in the first spot is Jokowi (31.3 percent), followed by Prabowo (9.8 percent), Basuki Tjahaja Purnama alias Ahok (8.3 percent), Anies Baswedan (4.5 percent), Ridwan Kamil (3.1 percent), Tri Rismaharini (2.8 percent), etc. Other names also arise in the survey, such as Hary Tanoesudibjo, Ani Yudhoyono, Tommy Soeharto, etc.

AHY ranked in big five (2.5 percent) when respondents were given 18 names comprising local heads and political party leaders. His sits behind Jokowi (45.6 percent), Prabowo (9.8 percent), Ahok (8.7 percent) and Ridwan Kamil (3.5 percent).

Agus ranked third (2.4 percent) when being included among 14 political party leaders to pick as president. Above him are Prabowo Subianto (13.9 percent) and President Jokowi (49 percent).

The Democrat Party spokesman Rachland Nashidik said that the party has yet to decide whether to nominate AHY in 2019 presidential election. He, however, said that the survey produces satisfactory results.
