E-KTP Graft Trial; Defendant being Told to Lie by Setya Novanto

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Irman, the defendant at electronic identity card or e-KTP graft trial, also former director general of population and civil registry for the Home Affairs Ministry, has admitted that he had received a message from Setya Novanto telling him to lie that he did not know Setya during the questioning conducted by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). The message was received from a man called Zudan Arif Fakhrulloh, his successor at the Home Affairs Ministry. “Here’s the message: If KPK questioned Pak Irman, please tell him that he doesn’t know Setya Novanto,” Irman said yesterday at the trial at the Corruption Court.

Irman made the statement in response to the testimony from Diah Anggraini, former secretary general of the Home Affairs Ministry, at the same trial. Diah revealed that Setya Novanto had told her to ask Irman to deny knowing Setya if questioned by the KPK.

According to Diah, the message was received after she met with Setya during the inauguration of the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) chief a couple of years ago. Diah later instructed Zudan Arif Fakrulloh to meet Irman to convey the message.

Yesterday’s trial session saw the first examination of witnesses after the KPK prosecutors last week read out the indictment against Irman and his former subordinate Sugiharto. Both have allegedly committed illicit enrichment of nearly Rp50 billion in the project that has caused Rp2.3 trillion in state losses.

The 121-page indictment specifically said that Setya Novanto and Diah Anggraini and three other individuals had committed crimes and illicit enrichment. Both allegedly hold a meeting at Gran Melia Hotel in South Jakarta which was also attended by Irman, Sugiharto and businessman Andi Agustinus alias Andi Narogong to discuss the budget planning of the e-KTP project in February 2010, a year before the tender begun.

Diah has confirmed the meeting.

Yesterday, Setya once again denied involvement in the e-KTP graft case even after being informed about Diah Anggraini’s testimony. The Golkar Party chairman said he will leave it to the court.

On Wednesday last week, Setya declined to respond to questions about his meeting and discussion with Diah during the inauguration of the BPK chief. “You can ask Bu Diah herself later of what really happened.”
