TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Rizieq Syihab, leader of the Islamic Defenders Front, also known as FPI, said that the commemoration of Indonesia's second president Soeharto's birthday and the March 11 Decree, known as Supersemar, was held to remind Indonesians of one of the country's major historical events. The Supersemar, Rizieq said, was issued to save the country from a treason plot carried out by the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI).
"Why was it a major event? Because Supersemar was issued by a great man of Indonesia to another great man of Indonesia," Rizieq said in his speech at At-Tin Mosque in Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), East Jakarta on Saturday, March 11, 2017.
Rizieq said that the Supersemar was issued in 1966 by Indonesia's first president Soekarno to be delivered to Soeharto to save the country against the treacherous PKI.
According to Rizieq, Soekarno did the right decision by giving the mandate to Soeharto because the country was in an emergency situation. "Soeharto, who accepted the mandate, who received the authority, have carried it out responsibly," Rizieq said.
Rizieq argued that in accordance with the Supersemar, Soeharto took a firm action by banning and eradicating the PKI. Therefore, Rizieq has called on Muslims attending the event to arm themselves if the PKI reemerges.
"If the PKI attempts to return to prominence, are you ready to fight against the PKI? Are you ready to arm yourselves? Are you ready to defend your religion? Are you ready to defend the [Republic of Indonesia]?" Rizieq said.
Rizieq also said that despite their faults, Soekarno and Soeharto should be respected and appreciated. Rizieq also said that Muslims should remember their services because Muslims might not be able to converge to commemorate the Supersemar if the PKI was not disbanded.
