TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The latest research in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine shows that social media are not good for young people.

The researchers revealed that the overuse of social media in the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram causes higher rates of isolation for the users.

In this study, the participants admitted that due to their habit to engage in social media, they do not feel close to people around them.

Nevertheless,  researchers are unable to explain whether those participants were isolated due to social media or they used social media to push aside feelings of isolation.

Further study needs to be conducted to help find ways to fight against several mental illnesses and ease the effect of isolation due to the overuse of social media.
