Indonesian Students Perform Jonggrang Folktale in Sheffield

TEMPO.CO, Sheffield - Indonesian students under the Indonesian Society (Indosoc) performed the Roro Jonggrang folktale at the International Cultural Evening 2017 in Sheffield, United Kingdom, on Saturday, March 4, 2017.

The short play telling a story about the origin of the Sewu Temple around the Prambanan Temple area, Central Java, was performed by 15 students who are pursuing their education at The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University.

Indosoc Sheffield chairman Steven Winata said that the Indonesian community’s participation in the annual international cultural festival was aimed at promoting Indonesian culture and tourism to students from various countries who are studying in Sheffield.

“Hopefully the folktale we performed tonight will make Indonesia more popular in the international community,” Steven, who is an undergraduate student at The University of Sheffield, said on Saturday, March 4, 2016.

Also performing at the festival were students from South Korea, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Romania, Ireland, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Sheffield mayor Denise Fox said in her speech that the cultural event served as a forum for international communities in Sheffield to promote their cultures and traditions. Mayor Fox added that the event served as a reminder that people in the city can live harmoniously in diversity.
