TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Foreign Ministry spokesman Arrmanatha Nasir said that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo may discuss military cooperation during his visit to Australia.
“The focus is [to discuss] various cooperation. Military cooperation will certainly among the most important ones,” Arrmanatha said yesterday at the Foreign Ministry building in Jakarta.
However, he said that military cooperation will not be the main issue to be discussed when Jokowi meets Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
Indonesia’s military ties with Australia have been suspended following an alleged insult to the national ideology Pancasila.
“A process has been done following the incident. Investigation results have been issued, the cooperation is only being suspended,” Arrmanatha said.
According to him, resumption of military cooperation between Indonesia and Australia will depend on the investigation results received by the National Armed Forces (TNI). Australia senior military official General Angus Campbell extended an apology and handed over the investigation report on the alleged insult to the TNI commander General Gatot Nurmantyo on February 8.
Jokowi’s visit on February 25-27, according to Arrmanatha, will be geared more towards strengthening bilateral ties. The heads of state will discuss improved cooperation in crucial sectors, such as education, cyber security, maritime cooperation and investment.
Jokowi will be accompanied by the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, the Trade Minister, the Foreign Minister and the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) chairman.
