TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of National Development Planning Board Bambang Brodjonegoro has failed to secure the position of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) President. Bambang announced the news on Friday evening.
“I didn’t make it,” he said on Friday.
However, he did not explain in detail why he failed to get the position.
"Because developed countries favor Africans more,” he said jokingly.
Bambang referred to former Togo Prime Minister Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo, who was finally appointed as IFAD President.
After going passing tight administrative requirements, Bambang was selected as candidates for IPAD President along with other 7 candidates from Dominica, Italy, Morocco, Mexico, Swiss, Turkey, and Togo.
The candidates were then selected again, finally leaving Bambang and Gilbert on 15 February.
IFAD is a specialized agency of the United Nations dedicated to eradicating rural poverty in developing countries. It was established as an international financial institution in 1977 as one of the major outcomes of the 1974 World Food Conference.
Bambang said he was motivated to join the selection of IFAD President.
"So far, there is no Indonesian who becomes chairman of an international institutions that are part of the United Nations,” he said.
