TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian linguist from the Mataram University Mahyuni, asserted that Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama conveyed a message to the public that they should ignore a person who was lying using Quran’s Al-Maidah verse 51.
"In this context, Al-Maidah becomes a tool to lie used by a subject to an object," Mahyuni said during the trial of the religious blasphemy case involving Ahok at the Agriculture Ministry's Hall on Monday, February 13, 2017.
Mahyuni testified that Ahok's speech delivered in Thousand Islands regency must be understood contextually. According to Wahyuni, the word "being lied to" would have a negative connotation if it was standalone. In this case, Mahyuni said that the verb "being lied to" must have a subject, which is the liar, and an object, which is the audience being lied to.
However, in light of Ahok's overall speech, it means that Al-Maidah was used as a tool to lie. Mahyuni also viewed that Ahok made the statement in his capacity as a governor.
"When the word was used, the concerned [Ahok] had believed that Al-Maidah is a tool to lie," Mahyuni explained.
Mahyuni argued that Ahok deliberately brought up Al-Maidah, and that every person has a concept of what they want to express. However, Mahyuni suggested that Ahok should never brought up Al-Maidah before Thousand Islands resident because his visit to the regency was related to fishery affairs. Mahyuni added that Ahok was out of topic.
