TEMPO.CO, Makassar - Deputy Chairman of Commission III of the Regional Representatives Council (DPD RI) Fahira Idris, stated that the number of Indonesian migrant workers (TKI) have decreased by 40 percent throughout the last five years. Fahira said that there were 586,802 Indonesian workers in 2011 and the number decreased to 234,451 workers in 2016.

"Monitoring migrant workers is something to be proud of," Fahira said on Monday, February 13, 2017.

Fahira stated that South Sulawesi have never sent Indonesian workers for the last five years. Fahira asserted that it was caused by an increase in economic welfare. "Although in the field, there is still illegal migrant workers and [stories of their] torture. This is for the undocumented ones," Fahira said.

A member of Commission III of DPD RI, Andi Muhammad Iqbal Parewangi, stated that DPD members paid visit to South Sulawesi since they find it astonishing that the number of Indonesian workers decreased by 40 percent, and South Sulawesi has contributed to five percent of that number.

"Now, since South Sulawesi decreased its migrant workers by five percent. This means conditions in South Sulawesi have improved and workers don't need to go overseas. This is interesting," Andi said.
