TEMPO.CO, Depok - A large tree collapsed at the entrance gate of Indonesia University (UI), Depok on Saturday (04/04). Two people instantly died as a result of the incident.
The tree has a diameter of more than one meter.
Depok Disaster Response Team (Tagana) Coordinator Abdillah explained a tree more than 20 meters high was uprooted due to fierce wind blowing at 4 PM.
“Two passersby were killed as the tree fell on them,” Abdillah said on Saturday (04/04).
He added that the victims were motorbike riders were identified as Rustiana Imala Putri (26) and Miftah Abdillah Achmad (26). This incident caused congestion around the area.
UI spokesperson Rifelly Dewi Astuti stated that the fallen tree is under Depok’s jurisdiction.
Despite the case, UI provided assistance in evacuating the victims. The evacuation was managed by UI Security Unit.
UI is still trying to contact Depok Sanitary and Environment Agency to deal with this incident.
She further added that the trees in UI’s areas are well-maintained and precautions have been taken to prevent the trees from harming anyone in campus.
