TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Conservation Agency (BKSDA) of Jember, East Java, has saved endangered animals, i.e. three yellow-crested cockatoos and Kalimantan white-bearded gibbons kept captive in a private home.

“We have received endangered animals from residents of Semboro sub-district under the supervision of the local police. The animals will be taken to a conservation agency,” the BKSDA Jember director Agus Ngurah Krisna said Friday, January 27, in Jember District.

According to him, the yellow-crested cockatoos had been held captive since they were little birds. The owner claimed to have been unaware that the animals were endangered before the person handed them over to police.

Agus said that police did not prosecute the individual(s) since they had voluntarily handed the animals over to the authorities.

Jember BKSDA, he went on, had explained to the owner the legal consequences for keeping endangered animals captive in homes.

Data from Jember BKSDA show that local officers had earlier evacuated two saltwater crocodiles kept in private homes in Probolinggo and Jember, as well as a Javan hawk-eagle.
