TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government plans to make the Port of Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, as a consolidated harbor known as a transshipment hub. Every international shipment would depart and arrive at this port that’s managed by PT Pelindo.
According to President Director of Pelindo II, Elvyn Masassya, consolidating international cargo at Tanjung Priok would be logistically cost efficient. She predicts that the efficiency rate would reach Rp 1.5 million per container.
“Cargo from Palembang heading to Seoul must pass through Singapore as a transshipment hub. There’s an extra handling cost at Singapore. Tanjung Priok will replace Singapore as a transshipment port,” Elvyn said on Tuesday, January 24, 2017.
Elvyn said that state officials will request international shipment companies to change their route. The change is deemed essential to make Tanjung Priok as a transshipment port. But the reroute won’t be imposed for international direct call shipments, especially for shipments that would be more efficient without having to transit to Jakarta.
“For example, why would it have to transit to Jakarta if it’s a direct call from Bitung Harbor (North Sulawesi) heading towards Manila (Philippines)?” Evelyn said.
The naming of Tanjung Priok as an international consolidated harbor is mentioned in the latest National Port Master Plan (RIPN) that’s been signed by the Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi on December 30, 2016. Tanjung Priok’s new role as an international hub will be supported by Patimban International Port that is planned to be built at Subang, West Java. That specific plan is predicted to increase sea transportation’s market share by 6.42 percent or 0.03 percent from the current market share.
