Gov't to Roll out One Million Domains Program This Year

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government has set a target to activate one million domains this year.

"The program must be completed this year, and one million domains must be active," Semuel Pangerapan, director general of application and information at the Communications and Information Minister said in Jakarta on Wednesday, January 11, 2017.

By 2016, only about four percent of the domains had been loaded with contents. The rest had just been reserved by the Ministry.

Semuel suggested that creating domain was one of the ways to encourage public to go digital. The Ministry will also provide tutorial videos on how to use the domains.

Andi Budimansyah, chairman of the Indonesia Internet Domain Registry, said that using the .id domain would allow faster access. In addition, many .id domains remain unused.

If you want to register a name using the .com domain, it's probably been taken already," Andi said.

Andi revealed that having a .id domain name that is similar with that of a .com domain is allowed, so long that it does not harm others. In such a case, a domain owner could file an objection. The .id domain administrator claimed that it has a dispute mechanism.

"There are law experts, brand experts, and government representatives. They will determine who will get the domain," Andi explained.
