TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The House of Representatives (DPR) speaker Setya Novanto expects the Indonesian Government to urge the Australian Government to investigate into Free Papua Movement (OPM) flag raising at Indonesian Consulate General in Melbourne. Setya has also demand prosecutions against the perpetrators.
“I believe it’s a criminal act that can’t be tolerated,” Setya told Tempo at Golkar Party office in Slipi, Jakarta, on Monday, January 9, 2017.
The Golkar Party chairman, said that the perpetrators have violated the Vienna Convention of 1961 and 1963 on diplomatic relations.
Setya has contacted Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi and request for updates on the OPM flag raising incident. “I appreciate that Mrs. Foreign Minister has taken swift, appropriate measures,” he said.
He expects the government to take the issue seriously, considering that the Australian military has recently disrespected Indonesian national ideology Pancasila. The Indonesian Government has consequently halted military cooperation with Australia.
The Indonesian Foreign Ministry has strongly condemned the incident. The Indonesian Government has requested the Australian Government to take strong actions in accordance with the prevailing laws.
