TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Transportation, Budi Karya Sumadi, confirmed that there are several irregularities in KM Zahro Express' passenger manifest. The ship's sailing permit was established and received by the Ministry of Transportation on 07:00 AM Sunday morning, January 1, 2017. The permit only allows 100 passengers to board the boat.
However, a sudden increase of passengers took place at 08:00 AM, just before the boat departed. The Ministry, according to Budi, has handed over the investigation of the alleged violation to the National Committee for Transportation Safety (KNKT).
"All these times we receive information on the number of passengers from word of mouth," Budi said on Monday, January 2, 2017.
KNKT is currently conducting a thorough investigation on the incident. "They're investigating anything that relates to the boat's activities, [the conclusion] will be announced by KNKT according to the existing procedure," Budi said.
Budi also promised that victims of the incident will be compensated. The compensation will be provided for families of the deceased, injured victims, and victims that are being treated at the hospital.
"The Ministry of Transportation [assured] that the treatment and compensation will come from a competent source," Budi said on Sunday, January 1, 2017. "I already made a call to Jasa Raharja this afternoon."
President Director of Jasa Raharja Budi Setyarso, said that his team is currently monitoring the number of compensations the company will provide. "Second, we're monitoring the victims and their heirs," Budi said.
