TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 6.6-magnitude earthquake shakes the city of Mataram and its vicinity at 6:30 am local time on Friday, December 30, 2016. The epicenter of the quake was at latitude of 9.37 degrees south and longitude of 118.63 degrees east, 59 kilometers northwest of West Sumba, at a depth of 91 kilometers.
Mataram Geophysics Station director Agus Riyanto told Tempo that the earthquake was caused by the movement of the Indo-Australia Plate as it dives beneath the Euro-Asia Plate. “Since it occurred at medium depth, the earthquake was felt in Bali’s Karang Asem, Lombok, Sumbawa and Bima,” he said.
Shocks were felt on varied level, depend on the location. Daryanto, director of Meteorology Station at Sultan M Salahudin Airport in Bima, said that the intensity of the quake was felt at 3 to 4 MMI (Modified Mercally Intensity) in the area.
