TEMPO.CO, Surabaya - Weather forecaster at The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Tanjung Perak Maritime, Eko Prasetyo, has called on the public to be cautious on the devastating effects of tropical cyclone Yvette that is currently happening at the Indian Ocean.
“Cyclone Yvette affects Indonesia’s weather. This cyclone can create strong winds, high tides, and heavy rain. The effects will be felt until December 24,” Eko said on Thursday, December 22, 2016.
Indonesia’s mainland acts as a runway for cyclone Yvette from its wind movement to the center of the low-pressure point at the South Java sea.
Strong winds with medium intensity rain will be felt in the eastern and southern region of East Java, Bali, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), and West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).
Other than that, tides in the Java Sea, mainly in its central and eastern region can reach 2.5-4 meters. Meanwhile, the Indian Ocean, especially at the southern part of Bali until NTT, the tides can potentially reach 4 meters.
Fishermen and shipping companies should be on alert throughout the ordeal.
