TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Jusuf Kalla condemned sweepings conducted by mass organizations, following the issuance of Indonesian Ulema Council's ban on Muslims wearing Christmas attributes.
"The regulation [MUI edicts] cannot be enforced by mass organizations," Kalla told journalists at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday, December 20, 2016.
Last week, a number of religious organizations conducted disseminations and sweepings in relation to the MUI edict at a number of shopping malls, including one in Surabaya, aiming at preventing Muslims from wearing Christmas attributes when working. The activities were supervised by 200 police personnel from the East Java Police.
Kalla added that sweepings can only be conducted by law enforces, such as police. According to kalla, sweepings can only be conducted based on positive laws. In other words, police has no obligation to supervise mass organizations who conducted sweepings based on an MUI’s edict, which is not a positive law.
"Sweeping cannot be conducted by mass organizations. It's a police work," Kalla asserted.
