TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia (BI) officially launched the 2016 Year Emission (TE) rupiah banknotes on Monday, December 19, 2016. The new banknotes consist of seven bills and four coins displaying the pictures of 12 national heroes.
On the Rp100,000 bill, first president and vice president Soekarno and Hatta remain as its main image. The Rp50,000 bills will have national hero Djuanda Kartawidjaja hero on the front side, while the Rp20,000 bill shows an image of Sulawesi's first governor, Sam Ratulangi.
The 2016 series of the Rp10,000 bill has the picture of Frans Kaisiepo, while the Rp5,000 bill showcases the portrait of NU professor Idham Chalid. BI also releases new Rp2,000 banknotes with a picture of M.H. Thamrin. For the Rp1,000 bill, BI decides to print the image of national heroine Tjut Meutia.
For coins, BI opts for I Gusti Ketut Pudja to be the image of Rp1,000. Rp500 coins have the image of Lt. Gen. T.B. Simatupang, Rp200 coins display the portrait of Dr. Cipto Mangoenkoesoemo and Herman Johannes' portrait is printed on Rp100 coins.
BI deputy director for communications Andiwiana said the selection of these national figures for the new money design was based on Indonesia's diversity or "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika", an Old Javanese phrase meaning "Unity in Diversity" that the is official motto of the nation.
The new coins and bills also display Indonesia's natural beauty on their designs.
The launch was held this morning at the Bank Indonesia Complex, led by President Joko Widodo and attended by Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati as well as BI Governor Agus Martowardojo.
