TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Embassy in Damascus, Syria, repatriated 26 Indonesians from Syria to Lebanon in the 281st wave of repatriation program, a program that has been ongoing since back in 2012, according to Acting Consular of the Indonesian Embassy in Damascus Makhya Suminar.
"The security condition in Syria is really worrying and it is impossible for Indonesian migrant workers to extend their work contracts," Makhya said in a press release received by Tempo on Wednesday, November 30, 2016.
Makhya added that following their arrival in Lebanon, the Indonesians will be flown home to Indonesia by the Indonesian Embassy in Beirut through the Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport.
Most of the repatriated Indonesians are Indonesian workers originated from West Java and West Nusa Tenggara, while the rest are from Central Java, East Java, and South Sulawesi.
Starting from early 2016, the Indonesian Embassy in Damascus is known to have repatriated 336 Indonesians, 88 of which are victims of human trafficking. Meanwhile, the total number of Indonesians the embassy had repatriated since 2012 reached up to 12,563 people.
