TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Legal Commission of the House of Representatives (DPR) will summon Police chief General Tito Karnavian in relation to his statement on possible coup at the planned November 25 rally.
“Police chief needs to publicly explain it, what was the reason behind issuing such statement,” DPR Commission III deputy chairman Benny K. Harman.
The hearing between DPR Commission III and Police chief is scheduled for Monday, November 28. The Commission III will request Police chief to explain that his remarks on coup attempt was based on intelligence info.
“Who was the so-called intelligence?” Benny said yesterday at Nusantara II Building in Jakarta.
The Democratic Party politician said he was is disappointed by Police for publicly making the statement without clarifying the source.
“The statement should have only been made after holding a coordinated meeting. The fact is, Police chief said there was possible coup attempt, yet, Defense Minister and Police deputy chief had said otherwise,” he said.
Benny asserted that the DPR may reevaluate Police chief post since the statement has sparked prajudice among people, which is not conducive to building a more civilized democracy.
“We want Police chief to be responsible for national security and public order, but the statement somewhat indicates that Police chief has been used for certain political interest,” he said.
Earlier, Police chief General Tito Karnavian had said that he would step up security measures at planned November 2015 rally, citing possible attempt to overthrow the government.
Tito claimed that he was told about “infiltrators” behind the rally wanting to take over the parliamentary building in Senayan, Jakarta.
