TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Music Museum (MMI) was officially opened on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at Gajayana Art Building in Malang. The music museum is the first of its kind in Indonesia.

The MMI founder Hengki Herwanto said that he previously had no intention of establishing a museum. "It started as a hobby and love for music. I and my friends in Malang later had an idea of collecting personal [music] items for public use," Hengki said in a phone interview on Monday, November 21, 2016.

The museum's previous name was Galeri Malang Bernyanyi (GMI). "Last year, GMI was transformed into MMI," said Hengki, who is also a former journalist.

Hengki said that some 1,000 people have donated their collection to the MMI. However, he will soon add more musical instrument collection from the archipelago and develop the museum's digital display concept.

"After the said development, my mid-term target is to make the museum an alternative travel destination in Malang," Hengki said.

Moreover, Hegki, who has a masters degree in Business Administration, also expects the MMI to become the center for music documentation at the national and international levels.
