TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Central Kalimantan Regional Government cooperated with the Peatland Restoration Agency (BRG) of the Environmental and Forestry Ministry to restore 100,000 hectares of peatland in Pulau Pisau Regency this year. The peatland was damaged by forest and land fire back in 2015.
"Out of 600,000 hectares peatland restoration quota set by the central government, Central Kalimantan got 100,000 hectares of quota," said Syahrin Daulay, Assistant II of the Central Kalimantan Regional Secretary in Palangkaraya on Monday, October 17, 2016.
Every year, around 80 percent of forest and land fires occurred in peatland areas. "We will restore the area with the most severe damages," Syahrin said.
In addition, Central Kalimantan has set a target of peatland restoration at 550,125 hectares for 2017.
Hopefully, the cooperation between the central government, provincial government, and other regional governments will not merely restoring the peatlands, but also educate local communities.
