TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned port operator Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) III plans to extend the docks in its operating area in a bid to increase the number of tourists arriving on international cruise ships.

Pelindo III plans to extend piers for large cruise ships with lengths over 300 meters to dock.

Pelindo III's PR chief Edi Priyanto said the piers that will be extended are the Ports of Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, and East Java's Boom Marina.

He said that as of September, 52 cruise ships arrived in Indonesia. As many as 28 cruise ships docked in Bali's Benoa Port, bringing 38,000 foreign tourists, while 14 others entered Indonesia via Semarang's Tanjung Emas Port, bringing 12,000 tourists.

"The 52 cruise ships carried 55,586 foreign tourists. The ships weighed a total of 2,721,597 gross tons," he said in Surabaya, Monday, September 26, 2016.

In 2015, a total of 130 cruise ships docked in Indonesia, bringing with them 128,574 foreign tourists.

"This year, the Tourism Ministry is targeting 400 cruise ships to arrive in Indonesia," he said.
