TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo inaugurated National Police deputy chief Comr. Gen. Budi Gunawan as the National Intelligence Agency (BIN) head on Friday, September 9, 2016.
The the House of Representatives’ deputy speaker Fahri Hamzah has confirmed the information.
“I just got the news. It’s a message from the House secretariat general,” Fahri told Tempo on Friday, September 9, 2016.
President Jokowi endorsed Budi as a BIN head candidate to succeed Sutiyoso. The House declared that Budi, who previously served as the head of the National Police’s Education and Training Institute, was eligible to lead BIN following a fit and proper on Wednesday, September 7, 2016.
During the vision statement session, Budi pledged that he would lead BIN to become a professional and objective organization with integrity. He also promised to improve BIN’s performance in detecting national threats that might occur.
Budi had served as the Bali Police chief, the head of the National Police’s Internal Affairs Division (Propam), the Jambi Police chief, and the former President Megawati Soekarnoputri’s adjutant.
