SMEs Contribution to GDP Expected to Increase

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Governor of Bank Indonesia Agus Martowardojo hopes that the role of micro, small, and medium enterprises (SMEs) to gross domestic product (GDP) can increase.

"We hope it can increase by up to 70 percent," Agus said in Jakarta on Friday.

Currently, SMEs account for 60.3 percent of the total GDP.

In the future, Agus said that BI will encourage increased access to bank credits for SMEs.

Based on data from Bank Indonesia, as of the second quarter of 2016, the SME sector credit has reached Rp 827.3 trillion, or 19.7 percent of the actual total bank credit.

The figure grows 8.3 percent compared to the same period last year.

According to Agus, since last year, the central bank has asked banks to increase the share of SME loans amounting to 5 percent per year.
