TEMPO.CO, Makassar - Fire ravaged through the old Sultan Hasanuddin Airport in Maros, blanketing the lounge. "It spread so fast, we could not handle it," Angkasa Pura 1 spokesperson, Turah Ajiari, told Tempo on Monday, August 15, 2016.
Turah said that fire began striking the location 40 minutes past midnight. Firefighter squad then attempted to contain the fire, to avoid fire spread to other sites.
They managed to secure VIP hall, archives room, and the storage. They also secured some vehicles and 2 small planes currently sit in the area. The fire was extinguished after three hours.
Turah claimed that the fire did not interrupt any flight at the Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport. Since it has been moved, there is no flight activity at the old airport.
Airport police Syarif Sikati said Maros Police are currently identifying the cause of the fire. "Forensic Laboratory team will also check on the matter," he said.
