TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -The 12th World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) conference, themed “Decentralizing Growth, Empowering Business", has been officially opened on Tuesday, August 2, 2016.

WIFE Foundation chairman Tun Musa Hitam and President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo opened the conference with short speeches.

Officials attending the opening ceremony were Finance Minister Sri Mulyani, Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Archandra Tahar, Investment Coordinating Agency head Thomas Tri Kasih Lembong, and Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama. In addition, a number of foreign representatives, such as Malaysian PM Tun Abdul Razak also attended the ceremony.

The WIEF was originally established as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Business Forum on October 15, 2003, that coincided with the OIC summit in Putrajaya, Malaysia. The forum was specifically formed to look for opportunities of new business partnership among OIC member countries by facilitating meetings between heads of states, industry leaders, academicians, experts, professionals and corporate leaders.

In the second OIC Business Forum meeting in 2004, the idea to establish the WIEF was pitched to accommodate potentials of major economies in the Muslim world, including countries outside of the OIC membership. In addition, the formation of an independent and dedicated forum would facilitate bigger business cooperation among Islamic countries and with other non-Muslim countries.

The WIEF Foundation, based in Kuala Lumpur under Malaysian deputy foreign affairs minister leadership, was established in 2006.
