TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Surabaya Mayor Tri Rismaharini has inaugurated Indonesia's first `Dyslexia Corner` at Surabaya City's Library, which is built by Surabaya's City Administration with the coordination and cooperation of the Dyslexia Parents Support Group.
"We hope that the Dyslexia Corner could increase public awareness - especially among parents with children suffering from dyslexia," said the Head of Indonesian Dyslexics Association, Cristiantini Dewi on Saturday, July 30, 2016.
Dewi explained that guided through the right approach, a dyslexic's intelligence may actually surpass the average intelligence quotient of a normal child. "Sadly, there are so many misconceptions about dyslexia - even among parents," said Dewi - who added to her explanation, a list of highly intelligent and high achieving dyslexics, such as Albert Einstein and Thomas Alfa Edison.
Following the official opening of the Dyslexia Corner, Risma - as the mayor is commonly referred to and is known - joined a number of children with dyslexia to utilise an application dubbed 'Lexipal', which is designed to increase awareness among parents and children about the condition. Through 'Lexipal', Risma participated in activities designed to help the children's spatial capacities - with 12 other features which is directly linked to the screen of the computer.
"There is no need to be sad, nor worried - every child has their own unique capabilities," said Risma during her opening speech, where she explained that her first child, is a dyslexic as well. She then advises parents to be patient - as eventually with the right guidance, children with dyslexia will begin to show their capacities and talents.
"My child might have dyslexia, but truth be told - she is the genius of the house," said Risma in her speech.
Dyslexia is a central nervous system condition that makes individuals suffering from this condition face considerable difficulties in reading and comprehending letters and words.
Surabaya's Dyslexia Corner is open for both children and parents to try out the variety of equipments and games that are provided in the area - one of the highlights is 'Kill the Mosquito' game. On screen, players could see virtual mosquitos, and further information or guidance about the game could be acquired from Surabaya City Library's staff.
