TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - North Sulawesi Governor Olly Dondokambey said that the newely opened flight routes from Chinese cities to Manado is the beginning of an influx of tourists in the region. The region nicknamed Bumi Nyiur Melambai, or the land of waving coconut leaf, aims to attract 1 million foreign tourist.
Olly said that the target will be achieved if supported by adequate infrastructure. “Tourism sector generates huge revenue, I expect foreign tourists to spend a minimum of Rp15 million per person. Imagine the impact if our target of 1 million tourists is achieved,” Olly said.
Last year, total tourist arrivals through Samratulangi Airport in North Sulawesi was 19,465. Olly said that foreign tourists to arrive by flights from six Chinese cities will bring back the glory days of North Sulawesi tourism sector.
Until end-year, North Sulawesi administration aims to attract 30 thousand Chinese tourists. The target is expected to be achieved through an affordable travel package worth for Rp10 million for five days and four nights in Manado. “We have received potential investors, both in hotel [industry] and others. We have been encouraging them to invest,” he said.
Sulawesi Utara Investment Coordinating Board (BKPMD) data shows that the region’s tourism sector investment stood at Rp193.04 billion, way below industry sector with a portion of 32.41 percent, investment realization was Rp983.76 billion and investment in energy and mineral resources was Rp251.32 billion.
